Bonfire Night/Halloween at Freeport

We had a dry and mild evening weather wise and plenty of people turned out to see the Bonfire and firework display. Sheila and "Urnie" were kept busy with hot drinks and Miles, James, Joshua, Harvey and Joshua ran the spooky dip and lucky lolly games whilst Jess, Tor, Naomi, Brad and Jenny sold slices of cake and flapjack to the public. 7 parents kindly brought along cakes for us to sell but for Lights Night we need much more. £95.23 was raised in total which will go towards Centenary camp and group funds for building maintenance. Thanks to Carnival Committee, Freeport, Jackie and Stephen for setting up the stall and to all those who supported us.

Camping trip part-funded by 'Vic' customers cash

The Scout Troop summer camp transport fund was recently helped by a generous donation of £200 by The Victoria and its customers in Hornsea Market Place. On hand was Rob Carlisle group Scout Leader to receive the cash who said "We are very grateful to Brian Thompson and the customers here at The Vic for this donation to our funds. It could not have come at a better time as we will be using it to cover our transport costs to our summer camp which we will be travelling to". Rob and his leadership team will be taking 32 scouts and explorers to the camp located at Marlow on the River Thames in Buckinghamshire.

Red Nose Night 2009

Another Great Red Nose night was enjoyed last night at the hut as the Group raised £100 for comic relief. Well done to everybody for dressing up (although next it might be better if you dressed down a bit Louis!!)

There were the usual games but the highlight, as ever, was the messy stuff. Joining Mr C on the receiving end this year was Assistant Scout Leader Steve. However whereas Mr C gratefully nothing more than UHT Cream pies, Steve’s preferred lotion was a pleasant flour and water (with a dash of red food colouring!) mix, carefully prepared by his brother Graeme. I’m sure it’ll come out of his hair at some stage although whether we can get the drains unblocked is another matter!!

Upcoming Events and Fundraising Diary Autumn/Winter 2008

On the 2nd November 2008 the Freeport are having their annual fireworks and bonfire display. Beavers and Cubs wishing to take part in the "Drawing Bonfire Night" competition should get their entries to Raksha by the 20th October 2008. The Freeport will be providing some prizes and would like to do a presentation for the best pictures from Beavers and Cubs - Winners pictures will go in the local press.

The Committee will have a stall at the bonfire night selling soup and bread. Whilst we don't need any volunteers for the stall, please come along and support us by getting warm with a tasty snack. All proceeds will go to Group funds, which helps fund various activities for all sections throughout the year.

Additionally the group will have a stall at the Hornsea Lights Night on the 28th November 2008. As in previous years we hope to have a Tombola. Please come along and help raise funds for your local Scout Group.

Scout Group Treasure Hunt - Saturday 28th June 2008

A huge thanks to Chris B for producing, yet again, one of his fiendish treasure hunts on Saturday night.

It was a pleasant warm evening as car loads of supporters and friends of the Group crawled (in cars!!) down the lanes of Holderness taking in such sites as Mappleton, Long Riston, Catwick and Siggelsthorne.....Why is it I kept on recalling scenes from the film The Wicca man as we drove around?!

As far as treasure hunts go, I am of the "Blow this, I'm giving up on this clue, let's settle for not coming last" School - however some of my co-travellers had clearly got the bit between their teeth and so I had visions of a torchlight return to the hq to be met by jeers and a few scraps of food left, but with all questions answered...But no - as it happened we were first back and there was enough food for several camps (NB if you are coming on any camps in the near future you will be sampling the delights of Phil's Chilly!)

The food was great so thanks to all who helped out. As far as winners and losers were concerned.....I could say there were none, however as Clem has been striving for 10 years to win the event (and far be it from me to level any charges at him for removing clues or changing signs over the years in his quest for hunt glory!), at long last that certain monkey has been removed form his back. So well done for just edging Colin and Laura into 2nd. Well done also to Ian and Cath for bringing their brood on the event and there is justice as Ian won a nice bottle of scotch for first prize in the raffle.

General Fundraising

Should you have any Bric-a-brac, Tombola or Raffle prizes, sweets/chocolate, unwanted toys, etc. We would be grateful for all donations. Bring them to the Scout HQ on Monday or Thursday evenings.

In previous years some of our fundraising has been doubled, due to parents being able to obtain “match funding“ from their employers ---are any of you able to arrange this for us in the future?

Over recent years the Roof Appeal fundraising has been very successful and the HQ has recently been re-roofed. It is hoped that access for the disabled will be improved and a new Explorer room be created in the foreseeable future (Funding permitting).

Further information will be available nearer the events!

Please support your “Kids” by giving a little --- be it time, money or unwanted items and then of course come on the day and BUY!

Other Fundraising

The roof fundraising was a ongoing project. In addition to this we need to raise at least £1000 every year just to cover the electricity, lease payments and council tax alone. Last year the annual spend came to £4000! So we can never afford to take our eye off the ball. Thankfully we were able to replace our kayaks via a superb grant from the Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council.

We are also hoping to create another Explorer room that can be fitted out with bunks. Sheila got the fundraising off to a fine start by donating money from her 50th birthday bash but we need to keep it moving along now.

We are also holding a massive table top sale at the Scout HQ on Saturday 4th November 2006, so come along and support your local scout group!

So..........If anyone who is reading this feels they would like to help an active scout group to keep going by making a small financial contribution it would be very very welcome.
