Hornsea Cubs learn the art of kayaking

The Hornsea cub pack recently enjoyed a evening kayaking at Dacre Lake thanks to funds raised from a Saturday Bag Pack at the Co-operative in Hornsea. The evening saw some of the explorers acting as Young Leaders and also teaching the cubs some of their kyaking skills. Cub leader Odette Smyth said "the Cubs spent their time the essential basics of how to move safely on the water. It was an extremely enjoyable evening, and helped prepare the Cubs for their transition to Scouts where kayaking is a more regular occurrence. We would like to thank all those who helped at the bag pack and the generosity of the donations from Hornsea residents and vsitors, without local donations the scout group would not be able to fuction."

Hornsea Cubs sleep with the fishes!

From 7.00 p.m. on Friday the 9th November until 8.00 a.m. the next morning 23 Cubs and leaders spent a fantastic night "sleeping next to the sharks" at The Deep in Hull. It was a great evening and groups from all over the district attended resulting in 100 cubs being there. In addition to being given an excellent tour with a patient, tolerant and very informative guide (thanks Sarah!) there were sessions on handling some of the prickly creatures, understanding the advantages of slime for fish! The cubs also designed some fantastic T shirts which they took home. Sensibly the Deep staff also ran a games session in the hope it would take some of the energy out of the cubs – they obviously haven’t heard of the power of E numbers!!

After having supper everyone “settled down” for the night by the tanks, around 11.00 p.m. Obviously there was a scramble to see who could get closest to the tank but generally the behaviour was as good as you can expect for a one night sleepover?!

One of the best sights was to see the cubs all sound asleep around 5.30 a.m. on one side of the tank and on the other side was a large shark also flaked out!

Breakfast was at 7.00 a.m. in the morning and frosties, juice and tea set everybody up for a dash round the shop where lots of good things were on offer and everybody seemed to go home with a little Deep carrier bag.

Well done to everybody – Mave and Bev for totally going without sleep, Catherine who brought baby Tom (he was a star) and Rob who lives about 150 yards away but enjoyed his first (and probably last) visit to the Deep!

Should anyone else be interested in “lending a hand”, volunteers are always welcome in all sections.
