Scout Group Committee
Hornsea Carnival Raft Race 2008
The Scout Group entered a team into the Hornsea Carnival Raft Race on Sunday 24th August. Jason , Simon, Dominic and Rob must have looked an awesome sight – all suited and booted in wetsuits and even making time for a swim in the sea pre-race. In fact for the first part of the race we stormed ahead…. and then we got into the water….. where one of the scientifically designed (but not tested) outriggers came away. The vessel proved impossible to get on and paddle. Luckily we managed to add weight to the claim that Hornsea needs an Inshore Rescue service and we accepted a tow to the finish!
Having suffered the ignominy of coming fifth (yes ok there were only five entries!) and receiving the “Least Likely to Finish Certificate” we are determined to get a top 3 finish next year!

Scout group A.G.M. 19th May 2008
A huge thanks to everybody who turned up to last nights Annual General Meeting at the hut. It was a great night, listening to what all the sections had been up to and watching the various displays; a great routine from the Beavers ; the Cubs translating ‘Be Prepared’ and the Scout Promise into Semaphore and Sign language; a high speed tent erecting display by the scouts ( how come this doesn't happen on camp?) and a fantastic sketch , which has more than a passing resemblance to the truth!, by the Explorers. There were 4 Chief Scout Gold Awards and 4 Chief Scout Platinum Awards so not a bad haul.
We were joined by Mike Prudom, the County Commissioner and Andy Dickerson from Hull Scout Shop as well as representatives from local organisations. I was really pleased to see Local scouting legend Dennis Miles who was there wearing his Silver Acorn ( it’s a scouting medal awarded for distinguished service to the scout movement) and looking in seriously good fettle.
It looks like we have also received 2 volunteers to help out on the Group committee so that’s really good news. Same again next year will do nicely! Rob
Although Rob did not mention this in his report, I would just like to mention that Rob also received an award from the County Commisioner at the A.G.M. for fifteen years of service to the Scout Movement all with the Hornsea Scout Group, thank you Rob
Grimsby gang Show Visit – 6th March 2008
A party of 30 visited the Memorial Hall in Cleethorpes for an evening of Gang Show entertainment. The party consisted of some Committee members, leaders, Explorers and Scouts. To make an evening of it we even managed to hire a coach which Clem drove for us. We managed to arrive at the Memorial Hall at the same time as half of Grimsby but that didn’t deter our resourceful driver from taking the bus into the car park next to the hall - Well there’s no point parking half a mile away when there’s a perfectly good space by the back door to the hall! I’m sure there was more than just the one spectator who was thinking – “Surely he’s not bringing that bus in here is he!?”
Whilst we manoeuvred the bus in the car park some car nipped in and took the spot we had in mind so well done to Clem for getting out of the bus and telling the driver of said car, who must have been quite pleased to get such a convenient spot, that he’d parked in the space reserved for us!!
The show was excellent – we managed to get a mention in the script - and people were generally very impressed that we’d made the trip. It was a huge cast with a mix from guiding and scouting. The music and singing was very good and yes, we all “did the Hailing, to all the ships around us sailing”. It was a long evening and well done to all who came especially the young ones - many of whom were off on a coach trip with school first thing in the morning!
